How I Plan My Trips

How I Plan My Trips

In these uncertain and unusual times, the only way I can stay sane is to plan all the future destinations I want to visit. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of planning your next trip. Many of us are stuck at home which means we have plenty of time to research, track and organize our next big adventure. So, I thought I’d share how I plan some of my trips.

1. Pick your destination

Perhaps you have a list of destinations you’ve been wanting to go visit forever. Or maybe you saw an amazing flight deal that you just cant’t pass up. Whether you’re going near or far, I try to plan in the same way to keep myself organized.

Some things to think about when picking your destination:

  • Is it peak season? (This affects prices and the number of tourists)

  • Do I know any one that has been here before? Can they give me recommendations?

  • How much money do I want to spend?

  • Am I willing to fly or would I rather drive?

  • Do I want to go alone or with friends? Family?

It’s important to think about these things upfront. You need to be prepared for the costs you will incur and be okay with it.

2. Find a time

I like to start planning as far in advance as possible because that’s when things are the cheapest. Although it can be hard to plan so far in advance, it usually results in a lot of savings and mental reassurance. Figure out a time that is far enough away to plan appropriately and will work with your work/school schedule. I try to plan at least a few months out, but sometimes spontaneous adventures are just what I need. Make sure to request the time off at work before you book anything just in case you have big projects or deadlines.

3. Track your flights

Once you’ve determined when you’re going, it’s time to find the right flights. Oftentimes you’ll already have flights booked or in mind (see step 1), but if you don’t you should start tracking flights now. If you’re within a few months of your travel date, you should book a flight ASAP as the prices will likely continue to increase. Otherwise, start tracking flights during the dates you want to go and wait for the best deal. My favorite sites are Google Flights, Momondo and Skyscanner. You can set price alerts and you’ll get an email when the price drops or increases.

4. Book your stay

Depending on your situation you might want to stay in a hotel or an Airbnb. I usually stay in hotels when it’s just me or me and one other person. This is also a great option if you have hotel points. When I’m in a group of 3+ people I prefer to stay in an Airbnb because it’s usually cheaper and you can get the whole place to yourselves. Peak season will be pricey no matter where you stay, so if you’re looking for the cheapest options I recommend a hostel. Although I don’t personally like hostels, I’ve heard great reviews from friends and this is an amazing and inexpensive option when traveling solo. Here’s a great site to check-out.

5. Figure out your itinerary

I’m a big planner; so when the trip starts looming, I start planning my day-to-day activities. I’ll write a separate post about this another time because it’s much more time intensive - at least for me!

These tips are purposefully general. We all plan a little differently, but having some structure is always helpful, especially if you’re coordinating with others. I know it’s probably scary to try and plan something in this uncertain time, but take comfort in the fact that most, if not all, airlines are offering vouchers for cancelled and rescheduled flights. Make sure to buy trip insurance and you’ll have no trouble rebooking for the future. It’s a good time to take advantage of the flight deals and support the struggling travel industry, even if you don’t plan to travel until the next year.

Happy travels!
